Trump fears 100,000 corona deaths in the United States

First, US President Donald Trump tried to downplay the corona virus. Now he admits that at least 100,000 deaths must be expected in the United States, and Trump added: "That's a terrible number."

The United States has been the country with the most confirmed corona cases worldwide for a few days. President Donald Trump's advisor to the coronavirus, Anthony Fauci, expects up to 200,000 deaths from the pandemic in the United States.

White House Coronavirus working group doctor Deborah Birx said predictions also included containment measures ranging from 80,000 to 160,000 deaths in the U.S., potentially more than 200,000 deaths. "This model fully assumes that we will continue to do exactly what we do." She added, "We hope these models are not quite right. That we can do better than these predictions are."

Will it get better after Easter?

Trump said he expected the rate of deaths in the US to peak at Easter - in two weeks' time. After that, the number of new deaths will decrease, "hopefully very substantially".

The President also expressed the expectation that the United States would be well on the way out of the Corona crisis in early June. In doing so, he revised his forecast. Trump had originally predicted a significant improvement in the situation for Easter.

Trump also announced that his government's anti-pandemic policies will be extended by 15 days until April 30. The guidelines call on US citizens to work from home whenever possible, to avoid unnecessary travel, not to form groups of more than ten people and to stay at home immediately if they develop symptoms of illness.

Are not binding

However, these guidelines are only of the nature of non-binding recommendations. There is more vigorous action at state and district levels in the United States. There has already been a plethora of mandatory requirements - from business closings to curfews - to restrict public life.

Trump has repeatedly made his impatience with these restrictions clear, declaring that economic activity in the United States will be severely hampered. Now, however, he warned: "Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before victory was won."

Grave allegations by Pelosi

House President Nancy Pelosi blamed Trump for the magnitude of the crisis. The president has played down the pandemic for too long, the leader of the opposition Democrats told CNN. This was "deadly".

The state of New York is particularly hard hit by the pandemic in the USA. According to Governor Andrew Cuomo, at least 965 people have died there, at least 60,000 people have been infected with the virus that triggers Covid-19 lung disease. A field hospital for the care of corona patients has now been set up in Central Park in the city of New York.
